How to remove and control ticks in dogs
February 8, 2019

It was a ‘Dalmatian’, male, just two years old who landed up in my clinic with a swollen face including nose, skin rashes, scratches all over the body, more so on the belly, lot of panting and hyper salivation. The family was with him, the lady and her son who was 10 years old. It was the month of February, so I could make out that dog had an allergen attack through food or through environment when he moved out of the house in open areas.

The family was with him, the lady and her son who was 10 years old. It was the month of February, so I could make out that dog had an allergen attack through food or through environment when he moved out of the house in open areas.

“Did you feed him anything new today, was there any change in the diet?”

“No.”

“Are there any green areas around your house?”

“Yes, lot of wild plants are there.”

There was no pyrexia, but the dog was absolutely uncomfortable.

Dog was taken to the examination table.

I told them that dog has suffered from allergic attack, it can be due to environmental pollution or pollen grains…or some other factors which remain undiagnosed. Since there was no change in the regular diet, I ruled out grain allergy.

The dog was given injectable anti-histaminic, through sponge bath to remove the suspected allergens. He volunteered to have water. Ice packing along with calamine lotion was applied to the rashes.

The dog was alright in 30 minutes but some facial swelling was there.

The lady asked me “Doctor, we cannot change our house because it is allotted one, how can we protect our dog from further allergy attacks?”

“Now you know that your dog is susceptible to allergy, be careful in this month of the year, keep some anti-histaminic at hand and pop it up if you see that allergic symptoms are appearing and clean the body with cold water. In case you see any skin rashes, apply calamine lotion to smoothen the skin. Please be careful because next attack may be severe one”.

“Is there any other way?”

“You can give Omega 3 and Omega 6 to your dog on regular basis to develop the immunity. Feeding Salmon oil orally is good option”

“Please do not forget to show your dog to your Veterinarian at the earliest.”

They agreed. The Dog is alright now .
